Night-Time That Are Ruining Your Skin

It’s no secret that a good night’s rest is one of the secrets to beautiful, healthy skin. But while you’re tucking yourself into bed early each evening, are your other pre-bedtime habits sabotaging your aspirations for #filterfree selfies?

These are a few “late-night NO NOs” that you should avoid, if you’d like to keep your skin youthful and vibrant.

Dozing off, while your makeup is on

After a long day, we know it can be tempting to simply doze off with your makeup on. After all, if there’s one thing we’ve learnt from Korean dramas, it’s that Korean stars always wake up with a full face of makeup – so that’s got to be right… right?

Wrong. Sleeping with makeup on can cause your pores to clog – leading to blackheads, whiteheads, and an icky build-up of oil and debris. Always wash your face and remove all makeup before bedtime, your skin will thank you for it. (We’re also sure this is what our favourite Korean stars really do before bedtime.)

Skipping moisturiser

Want to keep your skin looking great? Here’s a simple evening routine you should do every night – moisturise, moisturise, moisturise! And if you’re over 40, dermatologists recommend adding a retinol to your evening cleansing routine – which preferably looks like this:

  • Step 1: Wash your face
  • Step 2: Apply a retinol
  • Step 3: Moisturise!

This routine will take an extra 5 minutes each night, but it’ll be well worth it.

Sleeping on dirty pillows

Every night, we’re spending seven to eight hours sleeping on our pillows – and assuming you’re a side sleeper (which we recommend, as sleeping on your back can lead to snoring and throat issues), this means a third of your day is pressed up against your pillow.

If you only change your pillowcase once a month (or less), this means you’ll be snuggling up with a month’s worth of dirt (and whatever else is on your pillowcase). Even if you don’t like changing the sheets so often, at least swop out your pillowcase! And of course, when your pillow gets too dirty, do change that too. (There are lots of amazing options around, like our super snuggly Sofzsleep latex pillows.)

Being stingy with sleep

Sleep experts recommend that adults get around seven to nine hours of sleep every day – not only to improve your skin, but for a whole host of health-related reasons. A lack of sleep can cause stress levels to increase, and chronic stress can damage collagen in the skin.

Because collagen is responsible for giving your skin structure and elasticity, its breakdown eventually leads to skin losing its smoothness and firmness. (This is commonly referred to as simply, “aging skin” – and now you know one big reason for it.)
